Waders are common in the Netherlands. Purely ornithological, this means the study of birds, this page is not entirely correct, as only the smaller waders belong to this family, but in the everyday use of the name waders it is often used for the larger birds with long beaks, such as the heron and the spoonbill.
Other families of this order are not included, such as the gulls and terns. These are on this website with other birds. The name waders indicates that all these birds have long legs, with which they feed in the water along the coast, but also in smaller or larger lakes more inland. In the first case, it is usually the smaller waders, while the heron can be seen more often in the interior and often even in ditches in city parks. The long beaks serve to surround the sands of the bottom under water in search of food. Important food sources are insects, crustaceans, worms and molluscs.
